A new clinical care standard to be launched on 17 August will help ensure that patients are prioritised for cataract surgery or non-surgical alternatives based on clinical need.

The is releasing this national standard following extensive consultation and endorsement from Vision Australia, the Australian Society of Ophthalmologists, Optometry Australia, Orthoptics Australia and the National Rural Health Alliance.

Each year more than 250,000 people undergo cataract surgery. The national standard of care for patients with cataract is reported to be the first of its kind and will drive improvements and help health services to streamline pathways of care for people with cataract.

The live online launch of Australia’s will consist of a 45-minute webcast. Experts will discuss best practice and reveal how they have introduced innovation in cataract care. The conversation will focus on key aspects of care, including referral from primary care, assessment of patients, prioritisation for surgery and post-operative care.
