The new $25 million Human Therapeutics Plant has opened in Tomago in the Hunter region of NSW. The facility is by 聽and will manufacture alcohol-based hand rubs and over-the-counter medicines for use in Australia and New Zealand hospitals and healthcare facilities.
鈥淭his sector has long been dominated by multinational corporations,鈥 Whiteley Executive Chairman Dr Greg Whiteley said. 鈥淭his plant levels the playing field and puts the Hunter region at the centre of therapeutic manufacturing in Australia.鈥
The new facility, once fully operational, will create 30 new jobs across manufacturing, research, compliance and operations. Now exporting to more than 35 international markets, Whiteley recently achieved Medical Device Single Audit Program (MDSAP) certification, which enables it to export medical devices from Tomago to the US and Canada.
Designed to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, Whiteley said the new facility is the only therapeutic plant in NSW to meet modern fire safety and engineering compliance benchmarks. Environmental-responsibility features of the facility include: no onsite discharge, advanced containment systems, and a 50-year design life to support long-term operations.
The facility will also serve as a hub for collaborative research with Australian universities that include the University of Sydney, University of Newcastle and Western Sydney University; this research will be focused on tackling antimicrobial resistance and chronic biofilm-mediated infections.
鈥淭his is more than a factory. It鈥檚 a platform for scientific innovation and global competitiveness,鈥 Whiteley said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to be turning Australian research into real-world therapeutic products that are made in the Hunter to serve the healthcare system long into the future.鈥
Kate Washington, NSW Member for Port Stephens, said: 鈥淲hiteley is an award-winning local manufacturer that鈥檚 strengthened Port Stephens鈥 position as a manufacturing powerhouse 鈥 by expanding its operations and our local economy.鈥 Washington added: 鈥淚 congratulate the wonderful Whiteley team for its commitment to making more world-leading infection prevention products, right here in the Hunter.鈥
