Australia invests $422 million in 229 researchers

The Australian Government has announced that 229 high-performing researchers at all career stages will share in $422 million in funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council () . With this funding, chief investigators and their teams will undertake researcher-led investigation to advance knowledge in the national health and medical research sector.
鈥淭his year鈥檚 crop of incredible researchers will further cement Australia鈥檚 status as a world leader in health and medical research, and all Australians will benefit from their ingenuity and interest,鈥 Australia鈥檚 Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler said. 鈥淲e are fortunate to be living through a supercharged period of discovery and the 229 researcher-driven projects are more proof of that fact.鈥
Those funded include:
- the 鈥檚 Associate Professor Linda Wakim leading research aiming to develop a novel universal 鈥榦ne-shot鈥 influenza vaccine that provides long-term protection against both seasonal and newly emerging pandemic influenza strains;
- 鈥檚 Professor Jayashri Kulkarni leading a team to develop life-changing new hormone treatments for women with premenstrual, perinatal and perimenopausal depression;

鈥檚 Professor Zornitza Stark, to accelerate rapid genomic diagnosis of rare diseases among critically ill children.

The Investigator Grant scheme is NHMRC鈥檚 largest funding scheme. It supports the Australian health and medical research sector by providing a significant research support package and a salary, if required. 鈥淭he innovation, creativity and dedication of these outstanding investigators will help ensure we have the very best treatments, the very latest understanding, and the most evidence-informed health services,鈥 Butler said.
