New maternity and paediatric hospital for south-west Sydney
Monday, 02 August, 2021
South-west Sydney will be home to a new maternity and paediatric private health facility 鈥 鈥 set to open its doors in mid-2023. Construction is estimated to start in September 2021 on the site in Gregory Hills.
announced plans to build the $100m healthcare facility to help meet the needs of Camden and Campbelltown鈥檚 rapidly growing population.
Reported to be the first private paediatric-focused healthcare facility in NSW, The George Centre marks phase one of a three-phase, $500m+ integrated health and innovation precinct 鈥 a joint venture between Home Consortium鈥檚 HealthCo arm and Acurio.
Acurio founder and Medical Director Associate Professor Andrew Chang said, 鈥淭here is a strong need for additional healthcare facilities in the area, particularly a dedicated inpatient paediatric service. We are building the largest private maternity and paediatric hospital in Sydney to ensure the community has access to exceptional care.鈥
Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves commented, 鈥淎lmost 20% of babies in our state are born in south-west Sydney. The Camden LGA has the fastest population growth in New South Wales.
鈥淥ver the next ten years, the Macarthur region鈥檚 growth is forecast to grow by 27% 鈥 making it almost the size of Canberra鈥檚 population. I welcome Acurio鈥檚 investment to provide additional services to complement the public healthcare services within our community.鈥
Mayor of Camden Cr Therese Fedeli said she was looking forward to welcoming The George Centre to the Camden community.
鈥淐amden is one of the fastest growing local government areas in [the] country, welcoming more than 100 new residents every week. Many of these new residents are young families, and it鈥檚 incredibly important that they have high-quality services close to home.
鈥淎n increase in local medical services and facilities was identified as a priority by local children and families and helped inform Camden鈥檚 Children and Families Strategy. The George Centre is a step in the right direction for our fantastic area and I look forward to seeing this new medical facility come to fruition.鈥
Associate Professor Chang said the hospital will attract specialist doctors, allied health professionals and other clinicians. He pointed out that currently half of Camden region residents seeking health services, particularly paediatric and maternity, must travel outside the region.
鈥淏y bringing these services together, The George Centre will reduce the burden of travelling long distances for specialist care,鈥 he said.
鈥淧roviding the best patient experience is the key focus of The George Centre 鈥 it will offer a truly patient-centric approach.鈥
The George Centre will feature:
- 78 beds, including 57 overnight inpatient beds across dedicated paediatric, adolescent and maternity wards.
- A dedicated day surgery centre.
- Five operating theatres.
- Four delivery suites.
- Two endoscopic suites.
- A critical care unit.
- In- and out-patient radiology and pathology services.
- An on-site pharmacy.
- A multi-storey car park.
