Wednesday, 28 August, 2024
Newcastle Clinical Nurse Consultant Lyndal Moore has been recognised as 2024 Nurse of the Year.
Moore has been a nurse for 32 years and currently works for the Hunter and Northern NSW Youth Cancer Service, a specialised public cancer service for young people aged 15鈥25 years of age with a cancer diagnosis.
In winning the award, Moore was acknowledged for her dedication to her patients and their loved ones especially during difficult moments.
Calvary Mater Newcastle General Manager Roz Everingham said the award was great recognition of the care and compassion Moore provided to her patients every day.
鈥淭hose close to Lyndal describe her as 鈥楳ary Poppins in scrubs鈥 because she goes out of her way to connect with her patients as a friend, carer and advocate. She also has a magical sense of humour that provides so much delight to those around her,鈥 Everingham said.
A recent achievement of Moore鈥檚 was securing funding through the Calvary Mater Auxiliary to create a memory box for terminal patients to help their loved ones remember the special moments.
Moore also played an instrumental role in setting up diversional therapy trolleys for Youth Cancer Service patients. Working with her patients, Moore stocks the trolleys with a range of activities to help make being an inpatient as little easier.
Calvary National CEO Martin Bowles congratulated Moore for the recognition and thanked her for her commitment to her patients and Calvary Mater Newcastle.
鈥淚t is clear from the way Lyndal鈥檚 colleagues describe her that in line with Calvary鈥檚 Mission of Being for Others that she too consistently goes out of her way to ensure her young patients are cared for and supported,鈥 Bowles said.
Moore was presented the Nurse of the Year Award at the Catholic Health Australia annual conference. The award recognises an outstanding nurse, midwife or nursing team working in Catholic health and aged care services.
