Stroke numbers head south

A report published by the (AIHW) reveals that more Australians are surviving stroke.

The AIHW shows a substantial decline in the death rate from stroke since 1981, with 30% fewer people losing their life to the disease (from around 12,000 to 8400 annually) despite the population almost doubling in that time.

Clinical Council Chair Professor Bruce Campbell said the new data were encouraging and reflected advances in stroke diagnosis, treatment and care in recent decades.

鈥淎ustralia has led the way in some of the most recent advancements, particularly improvements to emergency stroke treatments,鈥 Professor Campbell said.

鈥淭he introduction of dedicated stroke units, increased availability of clot dissolving drugs and implementation of endovascular thrombectomy, where a clot is removed from the brain, all reduce disability after stroke.

鈥淲ith the advent of telemedicine for stroke, more Australians, including those in regional and rural areas, are accessing stroke treatment quickly, leading to improved outcomes.鈥

The AIHW report also revealed the rate of stroke events fell by 24% between 2001 and 2017, from 169 to 129 events per 100,000.

Stroke is largely preventable by managing blood pressure and living a healthy, active lifestyle.

Stroke Foundation CEO Sharon McGowan said while it is incredibly positive to see a downward trend in incidence and death from stroke, the overall numbers were still confronting.

鈥淚n 2018, almost 387,000 Australians had experienced a stroke at some time in their lives 鈥 25% of those were under the age of 65,鈥 McGowan said.

鈥淭he remarkable advances we have made in emergency treatment mean that more people are surviving stroke. We now need to put the same effort into recovery. We must enable people to live well with stroke and prevent [recurrence].

鈥淭here is also much work to be done to prevent stroke and reduce its burden on our community, particularly as our population grows and ages.

鈥淭oo many Australian lives are being impacted by this insidious disease.

鈥淭he coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has demonstrated the importance of prevention in addressing disease. We have an opportunity to expand this approach to broader chronic disease, benefiting the community, health system and economy for decades to come,鈥 she said.

Stroke statistics

  • Around 386,900 Australians (1.3% of the population) have experienced a stroke at some time in their lives.
  • Stroke prevalence is higher in males (1.6%) than females (1.1%).
  • Stroke was ranked ninth in the leading diseases causing burden.
  • In 2018, stroke was the underlying cause in over 8400 deaths (5% of all deaths).
