Research uncovers neurological impact of COVID-19

New research could explain chronic neurological symptoms associated with COVID, including the brain fog, headaches and fatigue experienced by some patients long after initial infection.

A team of scientists from the University of Queensland (UQ), and the have discovered viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 can cause brain cells to fuse, initiating malfunctions that lead to long-term neurological symptoms. Their , published in the journal , explores how viruses alter the function of the nervous system.

SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been detected in the brains of people with 鈥榣ong COVID鈥 months after their initial infection.

鈥淲e discovered COVID-19 causes neurons to undergo a cell fusion process, which has not been seen before,鈥 said Professor Massimo Hilliard from the , UQ.

鈥淎fter neuronal infection with SARS-CoV-2, the spike S protein becomes present in neurons, and once neurons fuse, they don鈥檛 die.

鈥淭hey either start firing synchronously, or they stop functioning altogether.鈥

In explaining this further, Hilliard likened the role of neurons to that of wires connecting switches to the lights in a kitchen and a bathroom. 鈥淥nce fusion takes place, each switch either turns on both the kitchen and bathroom lights at the same time, or neither of them,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 bad news for the two independent circuits.鈥

The discovery offers a potential explanation for persistent neurological effects after a viral infection.

鈥淚n the current understanding of what happens when a virus enters the brain, there are two outcomes聽鈥 either cell death or inflammation,鈥 said Dr Ramon Martinez-Marmol, also from the Queensland Brain Institute.

鈥淏ut we鈥檝e shown a third possible outcome, which is neuronal fusion.鈥

Martinez-Marmol said numerous viruses cause cell fusion in other tissues, but also infect the nervous system and could be causing the same problem there.

鈥淭hese viruses include HIV, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, measles, herpes simplex virus and Zika virus,鈥 he said.

鈥淥ur research reveals a new mechanism for the neurological events that happen during a viral infection.

鈥淭his is potentially a major cause of neurological diseases and clinical symptoms that is still unexplored.鈥

Hilliard and Martinez-Marmol acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Professor Lars Ittner and Associate Professor Yazi Ke from Macquarie University, Associate Professor Giuseppe Balistreri from University of Helsinki and Associate Professor Kirsty Short and Professor Frederic Meunier from The University of Queensland.
