Middle-aged and older Aussies who are forced to leave work are more likely to be distressed and dependent on welfare, according to an Australian study.

The authors looked at around a decade’s worth of data from Australians aged 45–64 years old and found that those forced to leave had less control and were less prepared, while people who chose to leave were in control and stayed satisfied, despite their decreasing health and increasing welfare dependency.

The authors say that helping older workers work longer could benefit both individuals and government budgets.
