New and improved vaccines to counter devastating infectious diseases, ways to lessen the side effects of chemotherapy and the ability to manipulate the body鈥檚 immune system to fight off disease are some of the medical discoveries which feature in听听Ten of the Best Research Projects 2013, released today.
The Minister for Health Peter Dutton said the publication highlighted the innovative work being undertaken by Australian researchers.
鈥淎ustralia has long punched above its weight in research on the world鈥檚 greatest health challenges,鈥 Mr Dutton said.
鈥淲hat we see in Ten of the Best is that we are doing just that and these projects are just some of the important and wonderful research work that is being carried out across our country.
鈥淚magine the massive benefits of a new vaccine to halt the impacts of malaria that is now at the human-trial stage of development or of the improvement to another vaccine which will see fewer indigenous children hospitalised with life-threatening diarrohea caused by rotavirus.
鈥淐ancer impacts so many lives and our researchers are working on many different aspects of the disease and its treatments to help those fighting this terrible disease. Ten of Best shows us just some of this incredible research.
鈥淚t reveals the pursuit of new drug treatments to prevent brain cells dying after injury or stroke and of a study of how we could eventually manipulate the human immune system.
Mr Dutton said all of the projects featured in听Ten of the Best听held the potential to help millions of people around the world.
鈥淎nd they are just some of the many funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council through which the Australian Government is committed to ensuring we maintain our world-class health and medical research reputation.鈥
