Northern Tasmanians have the opportunity to participate in an innovative exercise program trial which will enable them to live healthier, more active lives.
Launched by Minister for Health, Tanya Plibersek, and Federal member for Bass, Geoff Lyons, the
Strength2strength program will particularly benefit the elderly and frail, and those with chronic health conditions.
鈥淭he program will involve trained staff tailoring exercise treatments to each person鈥檚 particular needs,鈥� Ms Plibersek said. 鈥淒epending on those needs, the exercises will focus on muscle and cardiovascular development as well as advice on leading a healthy lifestyle. 鈥淎nd for those living outside Launceston, Strength2strength staff will be providing an outreach program for rural communities within a 50 kilometre radius.鈥�
Mr Lyons said the program would meet the needs of the local community. 鈥淪trength2strength will provide opportunities for safe, planned and organised exercise, which will improve our residents鈥� quality of life,鈥� he said.
Strength2strength is being trialled in the Launceston area, based at the $15 million federally funded Northern Integrated Care Service and, if successful, will be extended throughout the state.聽The program is being run by the Tasmanian Medicare Local, and will run for 12 weeks. Once the trial has concluded the Medicare Local hopes to extend it across other Tasmanian centres.
