Dr Mukesh Haikerwal Appointed Chairperson of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

Eminent doctor and leader in the medical profession, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal, will be the new Chairperson of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
The Minister for Health, Peter Dutton, said the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, had approved Dr Haikerwal鈥檚 appointment for one year starting on 19 July 2014.
鈥淒r Haikerwal is highly respected in medical circles and is also an extremely experienced administrator,鈥 Mr Dutton said.
鈥淗e will be a great asset to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australia鈥檚 premier source of data on health and welfare.
鈥淗e is a former national president of the AMA and current Chairperson of the World Medical Association Council.
鈥淗is interests in health are broad 鈥 he is also Chairperson of the Beyondblue National Doctors鈥 Mental Health Programme and a member of the CSIRO Australian E-Health Research Committee.鈥
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare聽is an independent statutory authority established in 1987, and accountable to the Australian Parliament through the health portfolio.
Its role is to provide the Australian Government and public with reliable, regular and relevant information and statistics on Australia's health and welfare.
Dr Haikerwal was awarded the Order of Australia in 2011 for distinguished service to medical administration, to the promotion of public health through leadership roles with professional organisations, to the reform of the Australian health system through the optimisation of information technology, and as a general practitioner
